Testing for fire rating is in a controlled laboratory environment where in the real world there are multiple different factors that determine how severe a house fire can be. The ability of the roof covering to conceal the fire to one structure or possibly limit the overall damage to both the home and the neighboring houses is crucial to creating and developing building standards.

Looking at this photo we can clearly see within the center of this house fire there are still fully intact Euroshield panels, the heat has warped the panels but has not caused them to fully burn compared to asphalt or shake shingles. You can also see how the flame spreads. If this was an asphalt roof it is highly likely that this flame could and would have engulfed the remainder of the roof. A cedar shingle, being a wood material, is highly flammable. It not only burns hot and fast but also produces embers which can damage neighboring homes.

Due to the rubber material’s ability to contain the fire to one structure, no neighboring homes were affected and the outside structure of the house did not fully collapse. The center of the home collapsed due to the framing being compromised, however the Euroshield shingle remains intact where most shingle products would be burned and have been thoroughly damaged. Real life examples like this are why Euroshield is striving to be included in Class A fire zones.

Depicted above is a Euroshield Vermont Slate Roof next to a burned asphalt roof. The photo on the left shows melted and deformed vents due to the heat of the asphalt roof burning next door. This is yet another example of durability and why the fire rating for Euroshield products must be changed. Embers from the asphalt roof landed on the Euroshield product, however, it did not cause the product to ignite or start another house fire. With any other composite roofing material, due to the elevated temperature from the burning asphalt shingles, it could have potentially led to a second house fire.

Fire classification for building materials began to develop in the USA in the 1940’s with Canada following shortly after in the 1950’s. We are currently operating under fire classifications developed in 1980 … forty years later, it is time for an upgrade. Roof inspection checklist

ROOF LEAK INSPECTION

Start with the obvious: are there any signs of leaks?

Check the inside of the house using a flashlight if necessary, to shine a light on any damp patches or other signs of leaks high on the walls, ceilings or in the attic.

Are there any stains, signs of mould or rot or other signs of water damage? If so, this could be a deal-breaker and you need to be aware of it.

UNDER-THE-ROOF INSPECTION

Check the underside of your roof deck? If there are signs of water stains, it could suggest leaks: again, a major red flag. Roofs and moisture retention never mix well – so be warned!

Check the condition of the flashings from the attic if possible. Flashings are the thin metal strips used in roof protrusions and intersections, and around the chimneys, pipes, skylights, and dormer windows.

ROOF AND GUTTER INSPECTION

Leaf buildup in the gutters can start to create water problems for a roof, especially in Autumn but they should be checked at any time of year. Leaves, twigs and other debris can gather and contribute to rot, mildew, or even structural damage.

Check the gutters and also where the water spouts discharge into to make sure the roof is channelling water away from the house effectively.

STORM DAMAGE INSPECTION

Do you live in an area of North America that frequently suffers from major storms?

These can be killers for roofs. Look for damaged or missing shingles, panels or tiles on your roof, for instance – an obvious sign of storm damage.

HAIL DAMAGE ROOF INSPECTION

If you live in the “hail alley” (the vast corridor in North America that most suffer from violent hail storms) you must check the roof for hail damage .

What does this look like?

Metal panel roofs – dents, pocks, etc. that cause water to pool, leading to rust or leak problems
Asphalt shingle roofs – circular, tear-drop-shaped, or pitted spots or cracks (“bruising”) causing it to absorb water and deteriorate
Concrete roofs – chips, cracks, fractures or “spatter” marks on the concrete, allowing water to seep in
Wooden (cedar shake) roofs – random damage or brown/orange-coloured splits, scrapes or indents in the shakes
FLAT ROOF/ SHEATHING INSPECTION - For flat roofs, an additional red flag to those described above is any sign of sagging. This can be difficult to spot from the ground.

Open pitch pans and membrane splits are other warning signs frequently seen on flat roofs. The pitch pans are metal boxes containing a sealer that protects supporting connections and irregular roof penetrations. Damage by cracking can compromise the roofing system and allow water in.

Depending on the climate, membranes can puncture or crack too, often from constant freezing and thawing.

The above DIY inspection measures should give you a good idea of where your roof is in its life cycle and how long before it will need repairs or replacing.

Bear in mind that if you spot any major problems from the ground, costly repairs are likely to be required in the near future. Unless you build that into your budget and have the cash available to organize such repairs, it might be best to move on.

You’ve done your DIY inspection and everything looks in good order. Can you go ahead and buy with confidence now?

Not so fast.

You probably wouldn’t buy an expensive second-hand car by looking at the bodywork and the engine, even if you do fall in love with it during the test drive. You would get a professional mechanic to check “under the hood”.

What’s on a professional roof inspector’s checklist?

Some types of roof damage are not visible to the untrained eye – especially from the ground.

A professional inspector may take up to a few hours to assess a roof and will be looking at the following four key facets:

Structure Structural issues can be catastrophic for a roof. Your inspector will check thoroughly for leaks, loose or missing pieces, rust, rot and sagging as well as soffit, fascia, gutters, chimneys, skylights and vented areas.
Materials Roofing materials will be checked for issues such as rust, cracked caulking, missing or damaged shingles/tiles/shakes/panels, problems with flashing or seals, as well as potential damage from moss or lichen.

When it’s not pelting down with rain, hail, or snow is the obvious answer.

But while that’s almost certainly the most important consideration, there are other factors to consider before replacing a roof anywhere in North America.

Is there a roofing season?

Well, kind of.

If your roof is damaged and needs replacing, you will need to weigh up whether the damage warrants an emergency replacement regardless of the time of year – or whether you can wait.

If you simply would like to upgrade your roof, you can do more research on when to get the job done and start planning ahead.

Either way, it’s a big project that can take many days or even weeks to complete. Ideally, you want the best conditions for a speedy build and the minimum of inconvenience for you and your family.

We take a look at the pros and cons of replacing a roof around the year in various locations to help you decide about the best time of year to fit your new roof.

What climate are you introducing your roof to?

First things first.

It won’t be news to anybody that the climate in Canada and the northern states is very different from that in the southern regions. Or that the desert of Arizona has a different climate to the mountains of Washington state.

The location of your home is one of the main considerations when replacing a roof.

Within the broad temperature differences of the north-south divide, there are also other major climatic conditions to contend with, such as:

SPRING ROOF REPLACEMENT

This could be a great time of year to get the roof replaced in the south. It is likely to be less busy than the winter months, while you also avoid the searing summer temperatures.

However, springtime in the sub-tropical or desert climates is more likely to see unseasonal heat which can delay building projects – as well as rainfall.

SUMMER ROOF REPLACEMENT

Many roofing contractors will need to slow down their work during the high heat of summer – or at least work around the hottest parts of the day and take frequent breaks. Some will take vacations at this time of year and won’t be available.

Shingles may become so hot to the touch that roofers have to change their installation practices.

A recent storm tore through our area, downing trees and power lines and causing roofs to collapse, ripping shingles off, and damaging siding in local homes and businesses.

Selecting a roof capable of withstanding high winds in the first place will help you sleep easier at night. If your roof has recently suffered damage, it’s important to have it repaired as soon as possible and to take steps to prevent future damage.

If you’re thinking of replacing your roof with one that performs better in high winds (so that next time a windstorm rips through, you don’t have to worry about the sight that will greet you afterwards) here’s what you need to know.

Wind damage with roof shingles

Alberta and Saskatchewan regularly experience winds over 100km/h (62 mph) .

A recent Edmonton storm recorded winds of 107km/hr (66.5 mph) in the city and one part of Alberta experienced a gust of 193 km/h (120 mph), which is tornado-strength.

Parts of Saskatchewan suffered from similar wind gusts so you can see how extensive these wind storms can be and how many homes and businesses can be affected.

This means a LOT of shingles get torn off roofs and a lot of home, shop, and business owners wake up to heavily damaged properties.

And we’ve all seen the pictures of entire roofs being blown off in the wind. So, how exactly does this happen?

The science behind roof blow-off

When a high wind blows over a roof, it creates low pressure. The pressure around the roof is now lower than the atmospheric pressure below it.

When air currents enter your house from an open window or door it creates pressure within that causes an upward thrust of air. This suction effect causes the roof to lift and blow off in the wind.

The pressurized air inside combines with the powerful force of wind pulling on the outside to lift the roof off (known as Bernoulli's principle).

This is a dramatic example of wind damage to roofs in North America. The damage caused by most storms is much more subtle.

What causes shingles to blow off a roof?

Shingle blow-off often occurs near the rakes/gables and below the ridge-line but shingles can blow off anywhere from a roof in high winds.

They are attached to a roof in two ways and this is the first place to look with shingle blow-off: the roofing nails that hold individual shingles to the deck or the adhesive strip located on the back bottom side of each shingle.

Ultimately, there are three main reasons for roof shingle blow-off:

1. POOR INSTALLATION

Inexperienced, unprofessional roofers may take shortcuts or make mistakes when installing a roof. This is a double-whammy as not only is it easier for your roof to be damaged but the warranty may be invalidated due to poor installation practices.

Problems include:

Improper nailing pattern: shingles nailed too high or not enough nails used to secure the shingles adequately, resulting in loose shingles
Incorrect sealing of the tar strip, which can easily be compromised by strong winds
Excessive overhang – any more than 1.5-inch overhang (or 0.75 inches if there is flashing) can cause problems in high winds

Each of these installation errors makes it more likely for a gust of wind to dislodge shingles and blow them off your roof.

2. UNDERLYING ROOF DAMAGE

Your roof may have sustained some underlying roof damage from moisture damage to OSB board, plywood sheeting, or corrugated metal.

This can cause shingle nails to pop out and weaken the shingles so that they are blown off in the next gust of wind.

3. END OF ROOF LIFESPAN

Shingles can be blown off roofs of any age but the older your roof, the more likely it is to happen.

Depending on the type of shingles, the materials used, and their level of exposure to the elements, the average lifespan of shingle roofs should last between 15 and 25 years. As they age, shingles become more brittle, the felt may shrink, and clawing or curling may occur.

The adhesive used to seal the shingles may also become less effective, weakening the shingles and reducing their resistance to wind, increasing the likelihood of blow-off.

What should you do if shingles have blown off your roof in high winds?

In most cases, just a few shingles will blow off your roof. However, ignoring this can lead to bigger problems down the road.

If you suspect that your roof has been compromised during high winds, the first step is to get a professional inspection performed as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

An inspection can identify the extent of the damage and recommend repairs. A professional can also advise you on the steps you should take to prevent future disasters with your roof.

If there is large-scale damage with more than 30 percent of the shingles cracked or blown off, you’ll need to decide whether roof repair or replacement is the best option.

How to prevent windstorm disasters with your roof

You can’t stop the wind but you can make it less likely to blow roof shingles off.

Some of the following steps are specifically for high wind roofing and others are common-sense steps to protect any roof from damage:

1. INSPECT YOUR ROOF REGULARLY

Regular inspections can identify if you have a problem with cracked, worn, curled, or missing shingles or water damage. These issues can all weaken your roof and make wind damage more likely.

2. PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO SEALS

As you’ve already seen, faulty sealing is a major risk factor for wind-damaged roofs. It is essential to check that seals on the edges of your roof are regularly checked and maintained.

Roofing cement should be used to prevent wind from penetrating the underside of shingles and blowing them off and the decking should also be sealed.

What qualifies as an impact-resistant roof?

An impact-resistant roof is made with materials that are able to withstand wind and simulated hail without suffering damage.

The Class 4 UL2218 test by Underwriters Laboratories simulates the impact energy of free-falling hailstones using steel ball bearings dropped onto roofing material. The balls are dropped from heights starting at 12 feet for a 1.25-inch ball up to 20 feet for a 2-inch ball.

To meet the acceptance criteria of UL 2218, the roof covering material’s exposed surface, back surface and underneath layers must suffer no tearing, fracturing, cracking, splitting, rupture, crazing or show other evidence of opening of the roof covering layer.

However, it is relatively easy for a roofing material to meet these minimum requirements and earn a Class I, II, III, or IV impact resistance rating.

In the real world, hail-fall speeds are dependent upon the size and severity of the storm and can be much more devastating than in the lab test.

So, “impact-resistant” and “hail-resistant” are not necessarily the same and “Class 4 roofing shingles” may be impact resistant but not withstand damage from a hailstorm.

Installing a roof is a complex project and without an experienced, reputable roofing company that knows what they're doing, it’s practically impossible.

So, you need to be vigilant when choosing a company for your project or you can end up getting your fingers badly burnt.

But what exactly do you need to check? What questions should you be asking?

Follow these four simple steps to ask the right questions, evaluate your roofing contractor, and protect yourself from a bad installation that could end up costing you much more than you planned…

Questions to Ask a Roofing Contractor

1. Establish company credibility with these three questions

Before you even consider the costs involved in hiring a roofer, make sure they're credible. Most credible contractors will actually appreciate you doing your due diligence and they have nothing to hide.

Here are 3 questions you should ask any contractor before you consider hiring them.

What is your legal business name?
This is one of the easiest questions to guard against being scammed. No contractor should hesitate, stumble or be offended by you asking this question.Many contractors operate under a trade name, which differs from their legal name. This is perfectly legal and often encouraged so don't get worried if you can't find them by their legal business name.

What level of insurance and certifications do you have?
Every reputable contractor should be able to provide details of the certifications and insurance they carry.Insurance and certifications are mandatory and must be held by all contractors to legally work as a roofing company. Any professional contractor should be able to demonstrate to you that they are part of a credible company and qualified to do the job.
The difficulty lies in verifying and clarifying the details, which you as the homeowner will have to do. Insurance rules and requirements vary by province/state so check with your local authorities on the code requirements in your area. Then, ensure the proper permits are up to date and in place for the contractor to conduct the work.
It’s important not to just take their word for it. Ask for the paperwork to be emailed to you for verification purposes. Be sure to ask about the workman's compensation and general liability insurance as well.
Who will be the representative on site that I can communicate with?
There's a good chance you won't be dealing directly with the owner of the company during your roofing install. Don't panic. Many companies have project managers whose sole focus is to make sure your roof is installed according to both local laws and manufacturer guidelines. Roofing is complex, so if there's "nobody running the show," a small problem can easily turn your roofing project into one that you read about in the newspaper.

2. Prescreen the company’s work quality and ethics with these four simple questions

Now we start getting a little technical – but these are simple questions that any homeowner can ask to screen a contractor’s approach to the work.

How many nails do you recommend using per shingle?
To save on costs, some less-than-honourable contractors may use fewer nails than necessary to secure your shingles.As a rule of thumb, no fewer than four nails should be used per shingle. Subtracting one nail can make or break a manufacturer’s warranty protection.
The required number of nails needed for each type of shingle is available from the manufacturer and should be clarified before your roof installation.
Can you do a layover instead of removing the existing roof and installing the new one?
This is kind of a trick question as a credible contractor will say no.A roofing layover is when the roofer nails new shingles directly over your existing shingles instead of first taking them off: effectively placing one layer directly over the other.
Most likely you're replacing the roof in the first place because there's something wrong.
In this case, covering it up with a layover will do more damage than good and is considered an unscrupulous practice in the industry.
An ethical roofer will advise you to strip the shingles first so that your roof isn't at greater risk.
Do you use subcontractors?
Sometimes the company you hire is not the actual company that goes on your roof to do the work.Be sure to clarify that the company you hire will be performing the job and, if not, verify the qualifications and training of the company that is, as well as if the original company's insurance covers them.
Do not use a company that cannot confirm who will be doing the work or that doesn’t meet the exact criteria and expectations you have verified the parent company.
What warranties do you provide with your work?
A manufacturer's warranty only covers the materials used on your roof and not the quality of the install.It is the responsibility of the contractor to provide a workmanship warranty on the work completed. If your roof fails because a product was not installed correctly, you would be reliant on the warranty of the contractor who provided the installation.
A one- or two-year warranty is standard among professional roofing companies. Be sure to get this in writing.

3. Ensure they have your best interests at heart with these two questions

Does the roof estimator need to come inside my house?
This is another type of trick question. A reputable contractor will say “yes”.Nowadays, many reputable roofing companies have teams dedicated to performing small-scale inspections and estimates that will benefit you, the homeowner.
Roofing systems that appear to be okay from the outside could be riddled with interior damage upon further inspection. A trained inspector/estimator can quickly spot the hazard signs associated with potential roof failures by looking inside the home.
For many homeowners, this brings the peace of mind that they're hiring a professional who is considering the project from all angles.
A reputable company will, at a minimum, want to check your attic for adequate insulation and ventilation. They will also want to see that the bathroom fans are hooked up and venting properly.
How will the job site be left at the end of each day?

What happens when the weather suddenly changes?
How will they secure the work that has already been done?

If you’ve got this far with your potential contractor, things are looking positive. However, there are four final questions you need to ask before hiring.

Am I making a decision on price alone?
The lowest bid isn't necessarily the best option. In fact, it is seldom (if ever) that the lowest price proves to be the best value. Be wary of any bid that is substantially lower than the others.It is probably an indicator that the contractor has made a mistake, has included all the required work quoted by the competitors, or is planning to cut corners during the installation.
The costs associated with running a reputable business are significant (e.g., taxes, licensing, insurance, and training) and contractors need to factor those into the quote. Bear in mind that the number one reason that roofing contractors go out of business is the failure to factor all the variables into the price.
This means that they are unable to cover their costs, which can put you at risk of a poor install or (even worse) an unfinished project.
Do I need a second (or third) opinion?
Most homeowners only hire a roofing contractor every 10 years or more and aren't familiar with the process of comparing proposals.This has led to some unscrupulous contractors trying to take advantage of homeowner's lack of knowledge in order to make some extra money.
It is highly recommended to get at least three estimates from reputable companies so that you are able to compare them. Be sure to ask questions that check the value associated with the cost so that you compare like for like.
Are they listed as a preferred/certified installer by the manufacturer?

What is the Best Roofing Option for Hail?

When you think about a hail proof roof you need to consider the entire roof system.

Many consumers who are out shopping for a brand new home or are planning to build are faced with a multitude of choices. Everyone has their “must have” list which often includes features such as granite or quartz countertops, stainless appliances, stone fireplace, hardwood floors…the list goes on. These are the nice-to-have visually appealing features. What about the “bones”? What is the best roofing material you should be looking at?

Most people have a budget to work with that will no doubt limit your ability to have it all. It really comes down to priorities. People often don’t think about the foundation structure, insulation, windows, and roofing… beyond the fact that they will have one. These items are often an afterthought because they are not visual in the sense that a granite counter makes a kitchen look rich.

Those folks who do take notice of the less visual items in a home are those who have “lived and learned”, that is to say they have had failures and shortcomings and don’t want to experience them again. If you drive through a new development of mid-priced family homes being built you will see that virtually all will have an asphalt single roof. From the builder’s perspective, a roof is not a priority selling feature, like a custom countertop, and the roof just needs to look nice and be inexpensive, like the other builders roofs. My Development Has a Restrictive Covenants On Roofing. What Choice Do I Have?

That depends. In some higher-end developments it can be common practise for the developer to place restrictive covenants on the structures built in that development. In some cases roofing materials are limited to a certain “look” or actual material type (wood roofing was commonly required in the past) and one could not deviate from this for fear of penalties such as fines and/or removal of the roofing material for non-compliance. Some of these covenants are permanently in place, others for a fixed period from completion of the development, such as 10 years or more. It really boils down to the language of the restriction.

In some cases it can be a restriction that the roof covering must have a certain look, wood or slate come to mind. In some cases in need not be actual wood but could be a synthetic product that looks like wood. Often for a roofing material not directly specified, in order to be “accepted” it is necessary to gain the approval of a board in charge of upholding the developer restrictions. Restrictive covenants can be challenged and lifted if the homeowners can mutually agree. It can often be determined by a vote of the homeowners, typically requiring 75% … up to 100% of them to agree, in order to facilitate change.

There is however “degrees” of hail-proof and some materials simply lend themselves to greater impact resistance than others. When we talk about roofing most people think only of the roof covering material, such as asphalt, metal, clay, rubber, plastic, wood or concrete. Each has its own level of impact resistance but one must also consider the substrate (deck) to which the roofing material is attached to.

What happens when hail (larger than 2”) hits various roofing materials?

In the case of asphalt shingles, it can cause a dent or depression that weakens the bond of the granular coating, dramatically shortening its usable life, and often will crack the shingle itself.
A metal roof can generally take the impact and will not be compromised however you are often left with large visible dents covering the surface and the cosmetic appearance is ruined. This may or may not be covered by insurance so it is wise to check your policy.
Clay, concrete and hard plastics, being a much harder surface are not as forgiving on impact and can crack.
Rubber roofing offers a tremendous level of impact resistance due to its energy absorbing nature and its return to original shape after impact (think car tire hitting a pothole) however if the object striking any roof is large enough it is possible that the deck underneath could crack or split from the combination of speed and mass of the object (think tree branch or extremely large hail-4” or more).

There have been reports in both Canada and the USA of hail large enough to pass through 3/8” decking covered with asphalt shingles and actually enter the attic space of a home. When we think of a “hail proof roof” we need to think beyond the roofing material and look at the roof as a complete system, which includes the deck underneath.

Your best bet? If you live in a hail-prone area with the risk of hail exceeding 2” and you are re-roofing or building new, consider a Euroshield rubber roof and a thicker (1/2” to 5/8” or more) substrate. I’m going to add solar panels but first need a new roof. What should I do?

Assuming you have done your homework regarding costs, rebates, payback, etc. and you live in an area where you can expect sufficient sunshine and roof exposure, you also need to consider the roof below the panels you are attaching to it. Is the roof structure (framing/trusses and deck) sound, free of rot and able to take the load? If so, then what is the best roof material to cover the deck with? You would not want to proceed with a solar installation only to remove and reinstall it a few years later to deal with a leaking worn out roof.

What is the best roof for solar panels?

There is no perfect material for a solar application but you should go with a “permanent type” roof below the panels. Why? Asphalt shingles vary in quality, thickness and price but on average, they last approximately 17.75 years (source: F.W. Dodge/NAHB). Do you want to deal with roof replacement in 10 to 20 years, having to completely dismantle, remove and then reinstall the panels? The cost and inconvenience will put a damper on the benefits of that solar roof.

If the roof is less resistant to hail damage then you may find you need to replace the roof well before its normal useful life expectancy. Remember the entire roof is not going to be covered by the panels.

"We own a tourist residence on the island of St. Martin in the Caribbean. It is a 4 star guest house with hotel services (www.residence-adam-eve.com). In 2015 we decided to change our roof to Euroshield Rundle Slate (formerly EuroSlate). Our decision was influenced by strength, wind and impact resistance, insulation and looks. On September 4th 2017 we suffered the largest hurricane the earth has seen...Irma, which hit St. Martin as a Category 5 hurricane. We had sustained winds of 300km/hr with gusts to 360km/hr. You can see the damage to dwellings on YouTube. At the end of the hurricane we noticed our neighbour to the left, his roof flew away, house destroyed and will need to be rebuilt. After a big cleaning we were able to open up to customers 5 days later. 80% of hotels will not be able to reopen for up to a year. “The Cage” Roofing Dilemma

"The Cage" roof after the first season and 100,000 hits

Sam Kassam, owner of “The Cage” batting cage located at Shouldice Park in Calgary, Alberta, contacted us with a roofing dilemma most people will never encounter. Baseballs being driven into his roof. The batting cage is located on a sloped concrete pad outdoors and has a circus tent-like mesh to contain the balls. In the center are the ball launchers which fire balls up to 80 mph at the batter. Many are driven directly into the roof of the structure. Sam has tried many roof coverings over the years and due to the severe conditions, they have not lasted very long.

The Cage has thousands of visitors each year who come to practice their batting skills. Some are at a high skill level and hit balls over 100mph into the netting and directly onto the roof. “The impact speed of the balls is typically between 30mph and 100mph,” Sam says. “I would estimate that of the 500,000 or so balls hit during the first season (Euroshield roofing was installed for the start of the 2017 season in April), around 100,000 of them hit the Euroshield Granville Slate roof within those speeds in this first full season. Sam had heard about Euroshield roofing and how hail resistant it was so he decided to give it a try. How Much Does a Rubber Roof Cost?

Rubber roofing is an innovative way to save the environment as well as the homeowner’s money. Almost every day here at Euroshield we get asked “How much is this compared to asphalt?” The question is almost not fair in a sense. It’s like asking “How much is this Honda Civic compared to a BMW 5 series?” the benefits will far outweigh one from the other.

For starters, asphalt is not a permanent roof, and will only last on average 10-15 years. Whereas Euroshield’s rubber roof is, and will last 50+ years. That right there will cost the asphalt homeowner at least 4 roof installations in the time of 1 rubber roof life expectancy. There are other factors to consider as well, warranty being one of them. Euroshield has one of the best warranties available when it comes to roofing material.

For the first 50 years it has a non-prorated amount, meaning it’s not depreciating in value over the years and it has a 2” hail warranty on it. Let’s talk hail for a second because depending on the area you live in, durability may be the most important factor to consider.

Over the years Alberta has seen some crazy hail storms in the summer months that are wreaking havoc on our cars, roofs, and siding. This is an ongoing issue that doesn’t look like it will go away. Yes our insurance companies are there for us and help with covering costs, but this will lead to higher premiums and higher deductibles at the end of the day.

Since our product is so durable, more and more insurance companies are starting to recognize this and are offering a discount on your home insurance. Instead of needing to replace your asphalt after a bad hail storm, you can be confident your insurance rates will be staying the same or dropping, instead of climbing.

We are so confident our product is hail proof, we stand behind it with our warranty, plus it also helps that we’ve never had a hail claim in the history of our company. So with these factors alone, I think it’s easy to understand why the cost of rubber will be more than a standard asphalt roof will run you.

Just like how the BMW 5 series is a premium option, so is Euroshield rubber roofing. But the nice difference is that Euroshield is one of the lower costing options compared to its competitors. Euroshield makes 2 different styles, a shake and a slate look. When comparing these options, real slate can run you almost 3 times more, and extra trusses and reinforcements would be needed adding to your total cost.

When looking at cedar shake, we are still less than the total cost, and won’t have the upkeep and maintenance required. Probably the most comparable in price and longevity would be a metal material. Metal roofs are great, but they have a couple downfalls as well. Denting, noise, and fading are just to name a few, but overall it is another premium option that holds many benefits as well. Compared to metal we are typically still the lower cost option, and I can bet they don’t have a 2” hail warranty backing their products!

So yes, rubber roofing is going to be more expensive than an asphalt roof, but the total cost of ownership is a lot less!
